Superinfection in malaria: Plasmodium shows its iron will.

After the bite of a malaria-infected mosquito, the Plasmodium sporozoite infects liver cells and produces thousands of merozoites, which then infect red blood cells, causing malaria. In malaria-endemic areas, several hundred infected mosquitoes can bite an individual each year, increasing the risk of superinfection. However, in infants that are yet to acquire immunity, superinfections are infre...

Fate of haem iron in the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum.

Chemical analysis has shown that Plasmodium falciparum trophozoites contain 61+/-2% of the iron within parasitized erythrocytes, of which 92+/-6% is located within the food vacuole. Of this, 88+/-9% is in the form of haemozoin. (57)Fe-Mössbauer spectroscopy shows that haemozoin is the only detectable iron species in trophozoites. Electron spectroscopic imaging confirms this conclusion.

Malaria, Plasmodium falciparum and its apicoplast.

Malaria, which is caused by species of the parasite genus Plasmodium, remains a major global health problem. A vestigial plastid homologous with the chloroplasts of plants and algae was discovered in malaria and related parasites from the phylum Apicomplexa and has radically changed our view of the evolutionary origins of these disease-causing protists. We now recognize that this large group of...

Anemia, Iron Supplementation and Susceptibility to Plasmodium falciparum Malaria

Anemia and malaria constitute major health problems worldwide, especially in tropical countries with low resources (WHO, 2008a, 2008b; Black et al., 2003). Although there are several potential causes of anemia, iron deficiency constitutes approximately half of all cases (WHO, 2008a, 2008b). Other important causal factors include parasitic infections such as malaria or helminth infections, hemog...
